THE WATER CLOSET

1996

When the chain hanging inside the cabinet is pulled, water flushes out of the tank into an enameled washbasin. Enough time passes that the viewer begins to think, "that's it?" when suddenly the water is sucked up through the copper tubes by a surprisingly loud vacuum. When the vacuum motor cuts off, the suction decreases and the water gurgles as it settles into the cylinder. The two bottom drawers are full of washcloths.
